Rockin It with Dish

So after all the comments about me having to miss Survivor when Jude made that HUGE spaghetti mess, we have decided to try Dish with DVR instead of cable. I am kind of nervous even though I know TONS of people with it and heard LOTS of good things. I have just had regular old cable for so long and am scared that a big storm will come and knock the satellite dish off of the house. Storm season IS coming ya know?

But I decided to get it for Glen's birthday. (ya know, one of those I-really-want-it-so-I'm-giving-it-to-YOU-as-a-gift kind of thing) They are coming Sunday to install it. Why is it that they always schedule it during nap time???

I am SO excited about the DVR though. I have been told that I am going to wonder why I didn't change to Dish sooner. So here's to hoping that I feel like that next week!!

What does everyone else have? Dish or cable or neither?

  • We have Dish...you will love having the DVR! It is so addicting that I find myself trying to fast forward through commercials on things that I do not have recorded. FYI-that does not work:)

What are you trying to say about my talking? I talk too much? I have not even stopped by your room to talk all week. I suppose I am a little social:)

  • Dish BABY! hehe We love it. I wouldn't even know what to do w/out it. I have all my favorite shows set up to record each week, so I never have to worry if we'll be home in time, or have to rush around before something starts. It's NICE. I know you'll love it. If you don't...well...you're weird..and that's that! hahaha j/k Can't wait to hear what you think!

  • Oh my word. Get ready for your life to CHANGE. I have Dish and DVR and I only ever watch shows that are MY shows off of the DVR. In fact, I really don't know what nights MY shows are even on!! It's AWESOME!

  • Dish is sort of dumb were we live and we can't get ABC or FOX so we just have cable and TIVO. You will love the DVR... it is totally worth the money!

By Blogger Lisa, at 5:42 PM

  • I have cable...in fact I switched from the VERY basic cable to the digital cable package consiting of phone and internet all 3 in one for much cheaper and we can call most anywhere for no extra charge as a bonus we too got the DVR and let me tell you, After having it you may wonder how you ever got along with out it! you may get addicted...it IS the greatest invention EVER I must say!

  • DVR will change your life!!! I will forgo groceries to keep it! HA! But really it is the BEST money we spend monthly. Ok, after we tithe. :) We NEVER watch a show live anymore. We always always always record then watch so we can fast forward thru commercials. I especially LOVE it for American Idol. I feel like they go to FAR to many commercial breaks and sometimes I get sick of all the corny stuff they do. We just skip right on along. ALSO you will LOVE being able to rewind!!!

I think I should go work for DISH because I could sell it for sure! :) LOVE YALL! Have a great weekend!

  • Apparently, I'm the only loser with cable. But I know no other. I fear change. ;) The house we bought has the dish sitting atop the back shed, but we went cable. We be ordinary folk, I s'pose.
I'm in a funk... can ya tell?

  • I'm jealous. I want tivo or dvr so bad. Our area has a waiting list to install the dvr and I told Chris I wanted to register for tivo for the wedding but he wouldn't let me...something about it being not a good gift...I don't what he is thinkg. Right now we have regular cable. I am so coming over to steal control of the dvr.

  • I just have your basic cable, I have thought about dish but too worried that I wouldn't get good reception durning storms, be it rain, wind or snow. Maybe I'm crazy but our neighbor worked for a dish network company and i asked them if they liked it and He went on and on about how great it is and then she said, except sometimes we don't get that great of reception durning storms.. and that made me not want it LOL.. I don't have DVR or Tivo or anything just my plain old VCR which I tape all my shows on and watch them later fast forwarding everything. but our cable if you get the digital cable(which I'm thinking about) also comes with DVR.. So I'm thinking about doing that.

  • DVR will change your life! It's amazing...we have all our show's set up to record too! WE can hardly watch live tv anymore because we cannot FF through the commercials!

    We have cable with dvr!

Can't wait to hear what you think!

By Blogger suzspeaks, at 7:29 PM

  • You are going to love it! We had dish with DVR for several years and just recently switched to Directv because you can record 2 things at once!! We rarely watch live tv anymore and record stuff to watch later so we don't have to watch commercials. Also, if your kids are going through a Dora or Diego phase you can just record some episodes for them to watch. Our son doesn't understand why all tv's don't pause and record...he's so spoiled to it! Let us know how you like it!

  • We have dish and love love our tivo. It's such a great invention. I was the main one that wanted to get it and now that we have it, husband loves it just as much.

By Blogger CG, at 7:37 PM

  • We used to have Dish, but couldn't get local channels due to big trees in our yard. So, we switched to cable, but we have DVR with our cable. I soooo miss Dish Network. They were great and we would totally switch back except that almost all the shows I watch are on NBC and I think I'd die if I had to give it up. Darn trees!

  • I have cable, with a DVR. I don't know how I ever lived with out it before. You will just love it!

By Blogger Mall Worker, at 8:08 PM

  • I've always had cable. We we live our cable also hooks us up with our internet.

Can't wait to hear how you like it. DVR I hear is really neat and you never miss anything.

By Blogger Nadine, at 8:08 PM

  • Dish. Tivo is a godsend, especially taping cartoons for later when you need them

By Blogger carmachu, at 8:42 PM

  • I don't know anything about this. But I hope you enjoy it! We don't watch tv...so no cable, or even an antenna hooked up. I have been watching Grey's, What About Brian and Lost on abc.com though! ;)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:57 PM

  • We have digital cable with a DVR. You will love having a DVR!!

(And we DID have Dish originally and it was fine, but when we got our big HD tv, Dish wasn't compatible and we switched to digital cable. We love it. I say- whatever works for you!!)

By Blogger Stephanie Wilson she/her @babysteph, at 11:22 PM

  • DVR has changed my life. We are all so much happier. The kids don't have to wait for commercial breaks during American Idol for me to check their homework. S.A.M doesn't have to wait until the end of ER to, uh, tell me about his day. DVR=happy family.

By Blogger Unknown, at 11:50 PM

  • We're total nerds. No cable, barely the network stations--at least when it's raining, then they come in clear. So sad.

By Blogger Scribbit, at 11:53 PM

  • Ian got lucky and when we moved into this house, cable was hooked up. I certainly wasn't going to pay to have more than the 9 antenna channels. We've never seen a bill or a link to how we have cable, but we have it... and we'll take it. Free tv... but when it gets busted, there is no way I am paying for it.

Enjoy! Being able to record your shows is so so so nice! We just have a DVD-R.

By Blogger Gina, at 12:54 AM

  • Don't shoot me woman, but you have been tagged over at my blog. It's a great cause to safegard our kids on the net. Don't usually do these, but this one was worth it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:05 AM

  • we only have cable...no DVR is available yet in my country...it seems like we are at the end of the world...
so much enthusiasm there...i am jealous

By Blogger Momo, at 6:27 AM

  • We can't get DVR here quite yet, but we do have digital cable and that's fun.

By Blogger Beck, at 6:30 AM

  • Once you go DVR you never go back baby!!!

We have Dish with DVR and have for about 2 years now. I LOVE DVR! LOVE IT!!!

Enjoy girl! You'll love it too!

And we live in the WINDY CITY with a dish. We lose the signal once in awhile when a storm is coming... and sometimes during the storm. But wind, snow and all the crap in between and we are fine!!!

By Blogger Angel, at 9:49 AM

  • YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Blogger Lindsay, at 10:49 AM

  • I have cable but I have a DVR with my cable. You will LOVE having a DVR!! No more commericials & you don't have to worry about being home when your shows are on! I almost never watch my shows on the actual night they are on - I wait and fast forward through the commercials. Enjoy!!

By Blogger Lori, at 12:02 PM

  • I'm such a dork. We don't have anything!

By Blogger Miss Notesy, at 1:53 PM

  • we have satellite, and LOVE it, now I can fit all my favorite shows on cuz I can start way earlier!and we live too far out to get cable anyways

speaking of shows I am so excited that America's Next Top Model is starting next week...I love that show!

By Blogger Lala's world, at 2:27 PM

  • I have digital cable with DVR. We got the whole package deal and it's saves us TONS of $. We used to have DISH, then went to cable. I wouldn't go back to DISH tho. They aren't going to carry CourTv anymore and I can't LIVE without my CourTv hehe. I also couldn't live without my DVR :)

By Blogger Gretchen, at 5:53 PM

  • We have basic cable here in London because we raise support in dollars and get paid in pounds...NOT GOOD! The dollar isnt doing well these days. It is only worth half here and the cost of living in double than in the US. YIKES...

example...our gasoline is just under $8 a gallon.

    CRAZINESS! :)

About tv...I download all my favorites.....The Office, Scrubs....from iTunes and then my husband and I watch them before we go to bed on our computer. I think it is pretty cool...

    Later.

By Blogger Anna, at 6:27 PM

  • OK dont faint when I tell you this. We dont have ether. YES. I know what am I thinking. Am I crazy. The answer is yes. See I didnt want to get it because I was worried the children would want to watch cartoons all day. Then I was worried they might turn the channel over on the movie channel's and see some things I much rather they wouldnt see. But I am thinking of getting it because I want to see all the home shows.

By Blogger Kim's Life, at 7:11 PM

  • cable WITH DVR!!!! Best of both! DVR HAS CHANGED MY LIFE!!!!!

By Blogger LaShawn, at 8:59 PM

  • Hey thanks for stopping by my blog:) We have Dish Network with Tivo and it is beyond WONDERFUL:) Just my two cents;)

By Blogger Randi, at 9:17 PM

  • Just catching up on your blog this week. I'm way behind the times technologically-speaking - I'm still on dialup and I just got cable in Dec. Enjoy the dish though - I'd love a DVR or TiVo.

Hope Avery did well on her test. Our school system has high-stakes testing for the 4th, 8th, and 12th grade - doesn't matter how well you do in school during the year, if you don't pass the test, you're held back. Talk about pressure.

Re: the blogging - you only made it to J? Don't make me change the name of my blog to "DO you want..." (Just kidding). Sometimes when I get overwhelmed, I just divide my favorites list in half. I might only ready/comment on Group A today and Group B tomorrow. I don't have *that* many on my list but I'm rather attached to the ones I do. :-)

By Blogger Elle*Bee, at 11:43 AM

  • LOL... neither. We just rent stuff that we wanna see (and I'm dying for the Third season of LOST to get released since I haven't seen any of it yet).

MIL lives a few blocks away and she has Dish so I could see anything I wanted if I would just drag myself over there. ;)

Oh, and I liked being homeschooled. I did get a few tastes of public and private school too but I liked HS best.

By Blogger Michelle, at 5:03 PM

  • Dish is spotty here in the Great White North. And I live in the thunderstorm capital of the country - a bad thing given the great dislike that dish service seems to have for rain.

These days, I download whatever shows I want to watch. Easier to drop 'em onto a flash drive and watch 'em whenever I have a free moment.

The kids stick to cable. Poor souls. Given what I do for a living - I'm a tech analyst, and I get quoted in all sorts of nutty places, like the New York Times and CBS News - it's like the shoemaker's kids having no shoes.

By Blogger carmilevy, at 7:03 PM

  • You will love it. We have cable but have PVR so it works the same. I just love it!

By Blogger Ashley, at 7:42 PM

  • I LOVED DVR!!!! Now we've had the TIVO set up for two years and have never gotten around to signing up for the service. Brilliant. :D We didn't have luck with the satellite service in Flower Mound, but I don't know how well it works here.

I saw Jude, your hubby and daughter at church today! Jude was in a shy mood like Lindley this morning. :D

I almost told Glen to tell you your blogger buddy said hi, but then I decided I might scare him. ;-D ...or worse, that he'd barely smile at me and blow me off! I'd like to imagine that he'd share my enthusiasm, but I'm pretty sure he'd back away slowly. Hee hee. You need to let me know if he spooks easily. If he doesn't, maybe next time I'll say hello.

I could have shouted "Happy Birthday!!!" and given him a huge hug without telling him who I am. Why don't I ever think of these things while I'm in the moment? So many missed opportunities. :D

    Anyway, enjoy your new toy!

By Blogger Flawed And Disorderly, at 9:12 PM

  • We have directv with the hd dvr...it's the best invention ever. I would rather have that than a cell phone!

It's nice to not worry about something you want to watch, because you can watch it whenever you want now.

By Blogger sari, at 7:57 AM

  • We have a tivo/dvr-like service for cable and LOVE it! We will sometimes start watching a program 15 minutes after it starts so we can skip the commercials.

Happy belated birthday to your husband! I think a dish/dvr is a wonderful gift idea. Any gift that makes the family happier has to be a great gift, right?

By Blogger Lynanne, at 8:12 AM

  • i've never heard of dish...but i live in canada...where everything is backwards...i do have a DVR...but here they are called PVR's...funny :)

By Blogger Ali, at 8:49 AM

  • Oh nooooooo, tell me you are NOT a Survivor addict??? lol

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:23 PM

  • I'm reading your blog for the first time, having read a few of your comments on Nadine's blog - and tonight I saw that she had a link to your blog...so here I am.

This is a topic near and dear to my heart...I'm a gadget boy. LOVE gadgets. Took me two years to convince my wife we should get TIVO - finally found a sweet deal on a used one with half price subscription and she LOVES IT!

We have cable with TIVO and I'm totally hooked on TIVO. It definitely changes the way you think about what you watch. We rarely watch programs live now - we just set up the Season Pass and watch when we have time and the need to be "brain dead."

Have fun with your new toy! One tip that may help...be sure you check the priority of your recordings. I missed an episode of 24 (ARGH) because I'd set up a season pass for another show that had an episode in the same time slot. On a TIVO, at least, the priority default is the order in which you choose programs to record.
