Yogurt That's Good For You

So by now everyone knows I went to Walmart yesterday. So I am there and I am getting some yogurt. We love yogurt at my house. Now I have heard that yogurt has a LOT of sugar in it and should be considered a dessert, so I have been getting the Dora kind that has 20% less sugar. It also has NO Red 40 dye for Jude (he gets hyper with things that have Red 40 in it).

I went ahead and got the Dora kind for the kids, and saw this Soy kind that is suppose to be really healthy for you. I have gotten it before and it was SO gross, but I thought maybe this time it would taste better. Maybe my taste buds have changed.

I love trying to eat healthy. I think it is important for my kids to see us as adults trying to eat and live healthy too. So I bought this Soy yogurt and was really proud that I was buying something that I thought tasted gross and was willing to eat it no matter if it gagged me out or not.

Cut to today. Lunchtime. I gave the kids Dora yogurt and got my Soy healthy yogurt out. Opened the lid, stirred it up and took a small bite (A little gun shy). AND SPIT IT OUT!! That stuff is NASTY! So I went from proud of trying to be healthy to ashamed that I wasted $3.00 on yogurt that is now in the trash.

NOTE TO SELF: No matter how healthy Soy yogurt says it is, IT IS NOT FOR YOU!!!

  • Yeah, that soy yogurt IS nasty. Heres my opinion on the yogurt thing. It MAY have lots of sugar in it...but it is no where NEAR junk food. I almost always give my kids yogurt w/ lunch..they love it. We do the Dora/Diego kinds too..and they really are pretty good. I don't see anything wrong with it. When you've got people cramming McDonalds french fries down their kids throats 5 times a week...yeah I don't feel so bad about the yogurt! LOL Its not nearly as bad as say...Icecream...hahahahah...KIDDING NICOLEY!! I know you like your icecream!!!!!!!!! Love you!! =)

  • They have the Light yogurt that has less sugar in it... you could do that instead...

Liam only eats the soy yogurt. Of course he's been on Silk since he turned one. I tried the Silk yogurt and it's not horrible, but certainly not something I'll eat by choice. Liam loves it. I have just steered clear of anything made with cow's milk. He's had a lactose intolerance since birth... I had to give up dairy when I figured that out. And I am a lover of dairy!

  • My Roman has to have soy stuff too. Although he cant drink straight soy or he gets the runs...probably tmi..lol. Someone told me last weekend that soy turns your boy....are you ready for this...GAY! She said it was because the soy helps enhance estrogen for women and therefore in men too. I was like I dont think so! Things that make ya go hmmmmmmm. Anyway..good for you for trying something new and healthy, even if you did spit it out. lol

  • You had me cracking up with this post!

I've never tried soy yogurt, but it sounds awful to me (hence me never have tried it) But now I know (or at least confirmed for good, cause I kinda already knew) that I will certainly not choose soy. ;-)

  • I like yogurt (Yoplait original is my choice), but have never tried soy. Now I'm wanting to go spend $3 just to try it and see if it's as bad as you say. Guess I should just take your word for it. :)

  • Now I know and thanks to you Nicole, I'll never ever buy Soy Yoghurt :D

Sometimes it happens to me too when I wanted to try out some new products and ended regretting it.

Yes, I usually go for the light yohurt and usually not plain.

Have a happy weekend dear Pal!

  • LOL...I totally agree with you...I've never tasted your US healthy yogurt but I'am sure that is not pretty far from ours...I don't trust that much in healty things though FOR SURE I'am a normal person!

  • I give you credit for trying the soy. I wouldn't have even gone there.

By Blogger Nadine, at 3:13 AM

  • Thanks for saving me $3...there is no way I would be buying soy anything. It just doesnt sound yummy.

BTW, I also like Yoplait and you can get it here in the UK which is a bonus!

  • all I can say is it SOUNDS nasty and thanks for the heads up! Good for your willingness though! I would no way make it that far! Kids maybe would have liked it;)
I am not much for milk or milk products! I do love ice cream and cheese which is about it...I suppose I like Soy in my coffee drinks. As far as the red dye, my boss is DEATHLY allergic to it she will actually break out into migrane headaches and bad sweats...and be down for days! amazing as it is even found in most white cake mixes and white frostings....i hate to label read But I do for her as I always find myself making something for the shop, and want to let her eat it too!
Thanks for stopping by my blog and you totally sweet comments! I love your layout! It is fabulous!
    Have a great weekend!

  • It sounds grose! :) I've never tried the Dora yogurt but I may have to.

ps.. how in the heck did you find out that Jude was allergic to Red Dye 40?

  • Nasty! We avoid soy because of a family history of ovarian cancer. But if it's a food you want to include in your diet, you can make fruit smoothies with it to hide the flavour.
WE just eat the natural unsweetened yogurt in our house - we stir in some low-sugar fruit preserves and that way I have control over how much sugar is in it. But even with sugar, yogurt is a very healthy food so long as it has the live bacterial cultures in it.

  • Ew, I have tried that before, and you're right, IT'S NASTY! Congrats on trying to give it another shot, but some things are just NOT meant to be liked!!

  • EXCELLENT POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are so funny. I do the lite 85 yougurt with only 85 calories. It is not that bad for you and it tastes better than soy! YUCK

By Blogger Ashley, at 8:09 AM

  • LOL... I've done the same thing myself (not soy yogurt though). My kids LOVE the YoBaby yogurt and I eat a lot of the vanilla or strawberry Stonyfield. At least the sugar isn't bleached.

Oh, if you don't mind the flavor of molasses, Brown Cow brand doesn't have sugar in it and though it isn't organic, it's rBGH free.

Our big thing is we're trying to avoid corn syrup. It makes my ds act possessed. No kidding. :(

  • Eight and I are lactose intolerant and we've tried the soy milk and felt the same way. I'd rather not drink milk than drink that stuff - you're exactly right, it's just nasty.

There's always a better way to be healthy than that, ha ha!

By Blogger sari, at 8:44 AM

  • Thanks for the heads up on some nasty yogurt. I seem to always get the same kind but now can't think of what brand it is. Don't you just hate when you get something that ends up being a waste of money.

  • I've tried to like gross stuff over and over again as well for the sake of eating healthier. Sometimes it's just too gross though!! Good for you for trying to like it though!

By Blogger mom of 2, at 10:09 AM

  • Soy is GROSS!
You are brave I would have stuck to the normal stuff!!!

I give Trav YoBaby Yogurt and it is pretty good with whole milk but the soy version makes me wanna gag too!!!

By Blogger Lindsay, at 10:47 AM

  • Soy yougurt? Ewwwwww.

Better to give something from something a bit less healthy that they(or you) will eat than something healthy you have to gag down...

My mother tried that with liver when we were growing up, because it was good for us....and it made dinner time 3 hours long....she'd rather give us something else than that...

    Dora yogurt is fine...

By Blogger carmachu, at 10:59 AM

  • Soy...you bought something on purpose that has soy...and you LIKE eating healthy...and you notice things like red food coloring and the effects it has on your child.

How are we supposed to get along if you continue to act this way?

By Blogger Flawed And Disorderly, at 9:24 PM

  • You know by now that I am all about healthy! But, YOGURT IS NASTY. You taste buds will never like yogurt. They couldn't. I do not like it. I do not like it Sam I Am. I do not like it mixed with JAM. I do not like it on a cone. I like to leave it all alone. But, I would have LOL to see you spit it out!

OK...that was bad. I got carried away. I love the sugar free JELLO pudding with sugar free COOL WHIP. That satisfies my cravings.

By Blogger Lynn, at 10:17 PM

  • As I sit here eating my Whole Soy Yogurt! Have you tried just buying plain yogurt and adding your own fruit to it? Our favorite here is plain yogurt with frozen blueberries and granola - you'll never miss all that sugar - I promise!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:17 AM

  • cute story and I can sooooo relate

By Blogger Mel, at 10:29 AM

  • I am not a yogurt fan in the first place...so soy...yea.

I am bad about spending money on stuff though thinking maybe I will like it. That is why I have three boxes of Weight Watchers cereal sitting on my pantry shelf ( FOR THE RECORD, I had a coupon)

By Blogger LaShawn, at 3:09 PM

  • I have to agree anything soy is nasty! and now there is all sorts of studies saying to limit the amount of soy for women, someting to do with raising estrogen levels, also for J's new diet program it says absolutely NO soy!! no tofu! that is for all auto-immune diseases. I thought that was interesting. so who says that soy products are good for you? I personally wonder if it is the people out to make the most $$$!!

By Blogger Lala's world, at 6:05 PM

  • Ok so since we are a dairy-free mama/ daughter duo, we do the soy stuff and love it so I GOTTA ask... what BRAND did you try? Because, true, some of that stuff is NAST-TEH! But we eat Silk or Whole Foods & Co. which we love. Even my Hubs who is a dairyaholic cannot tell the diff with the vanilla flave. I'm just saying...
    ;)
